Cannon McIntosh Redeems Himself at 81 Speedway with Xtreme Outlaw Midget Series Win

(May 11, 2024) Wichita, KS – A year after a close finish at 81 Speedway, Cannon McIntosh secured his second win of the season with the Xtreme Outlaw Midget Series presented by Toyota. McIntosh, 21, from Bixby, OK, led several laps during the series debut at the 3/8-mile oval in 2023 but fell short of victory. This time, he emerged triumphant after a dramatic late-race twist.

Late-Race Drama

McIntosh spent much of the 25-lap main event chasing his teammate Ryan Timms for the lead. However, with six laps remaining, Timms suffered a left-rear tire blowout, bringing out the caution flag and handing the lead to McIntosh. He maintained his position through the final restart, including a green-white-checkered finish, to claim his seventh career Xtreme Outlaw Feature win.

“I was glad to come back here and win after losing it late in the race last year,” McIntosh said. “I thought it might happen again with those yellows and the green-white-checkered, but I got a good restart and pulled away.”

Strong Performance

The victory was McIntosh’s first since the season opener in March and his second since rejoining Keith Kunz Curb-Agajanian Motorsports (KKM). Kansas became the fifth state where he has won a Series Feature, adding to his victories in Oklahoma, Illinois, Missouri, and North Carolina.

Reuniting with KKM has been a positive change for McIntosh after spending three seasons with his father’s team, Dave Mac-Dalby Motorsports. “We’ve had really good cars every weekend,” McIntosh said. “It’s just been a matter of me adapting and getting used to this car, which is different from our family car.”

The Race Unfolds

McIntosh started the race strong, earning the most passing points in qualifying and heat races. He began the main event from the outside of Row 2, quickly moving into second place and challenging Timms for the lead. On lap 9, McIntosh attempted a slide job on Timms, briefly taking the lead before bouncing in Turn 1 and dropping back to third.

Timms then extended his lead, but a tire blowout on lap 20 forced him to the work area and handed the lead to McIntosh. McIntosh defended his position through the final restart, securing the win. “I knew if no one slid me in Turns 1 and 2, I’d be fine,” he said.

Podium Finishers

Chase McDermand, who won at 81 Speedway last year, finished second after starting ninth. He passed Kale Drake in the final laps but couldn’t catch McIntosh. “Starting more forward would have helped,” McDermand said. “The car was really good, but it took too long to get through the field.”

Kale Drake finished third, while Gavin Miller and Jade Avedisian completed the top five. KKM had four of the top five finishers.

Next Event

The Xtreme Outlaw Midget Series will return to competition on May 21-22 at Millbridge Speedway. Tickets will be available at the gate, and the event will be streamed live on DIRTVision.
