(July 15, 2024) Eagle, NE – The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series made a memorable debut at Eagle Raceway, marking the first national touring late model event at the track in 20 years. Hudson O’Neal, the reigning series champion, clinched the victory in the Malvern Bank High Bank Heist, his first since February 6. The win earned him a $10,000 prize.
O’Neal’s Strategic Race
Starting from the third position, O’Neal quickly seized the lead on the opening lap when polesitter Garrett Alberson drifted high in turn two. Though Ricky Thornton Jr. overtook him on lap five, O’Neal reclaimed the lead on lap 13 and held it for the remainder of the 40-lap race. The top five drivers battled fiercely, often within the same straightaway, but O’Neal maintained his lead.
Thornton and Davenport on the Podium
Ricky Thornton Jr., the current points leader, finished second, just 1.516 seconds behind O’Neal. Thornton praised his team and the track’s performance, expressing hope for a return next year. Jonathan Davenport secured third place, rounding out the podium, and noted improvements in his car’s performance despite some bad luck during the race.
O’Neal’s Return to Victory Lane
Hudson O’Neal celebrated his 28th career win in Lucas Oil Victory Lane, his first since East Bay in February. Reflecting on his challenging year, O’Neal expressed gratitude and optimism for future races with his team, SSI Motorsports.
