(June 9, 2024) Lisle, NY – On a night dedicated to his friend Dale Planck, Jimmy Phelps made a remarkable return to the Super DIRTcar Series Victory Lane. Phelps overtook Mat Williamson on lap 23 and maintained his lead to win the Natural 77 at Thunder Mountain Speedway.
Williamson Leads Early
Mat Williamson, who started from pole position, initially led the race with Tim Sears Jr. close behind. After an early back-and-forth, Sears took the lead on lap 3 but was soon overtaken by Williamson again on lap 10. However, Williamson’s attempt to pass a lapped car on the outside opened the door for Phelps to take the lead on lap 23.
Sheppard’s Mid-Race Move
Matt Sheppard, known for his patience, saw an opportunity on lap 53 but lost two positions when he moved off the bottom. This allowed Williamson and Sears to pass him, securing second and third places, respectively.
Phelps Clinches the Win
From lap 23 onwards, Phelps stayed ahead despite navigating through lap traffic. He remained unchallenged, winning his 22nd Super DIRTcar Series race and first since August 2022. Phelps expressed his satisfaction with the victory, dedicating it to the Planck family.
Williamson Extends Podium Streak
Mat Williamson finished second, extending his podium streak to six races and increasing his points lead over Sheppard. Despite starting from pole and not securing the win, Williamson acknowledged Phelps’ patience and skill during the race.
Sears Achieves Season’s Best Finish
Tim Sears Jr. finished third, marking his best Super DIRTcar Series result of the season. Reflecting on his performance, Sears noted he should have moved to the bottom sooner while leading.
Upcoming Event
The Super DIRTcar Series will next race at Weedsport Speedway for the Hall of Fame 100 on July 14. This event serves as the second Super DIRT Week Qualifier of the season.
