(April 5, 2024) Osborn, MO – Karter Sarff secured his first win of the 2024 season in the Xtreme Outlaw Midget Series presented by Toyota, taking the top spot at US 36 Raceway. The 21-year-old from Mason City, IL, showcased relentless speed and pressure, executing a decisive slide job on Cannon McIntosh with 10 laps remaining to capture his third career Series victory.
Early Season Success
Sarff, who won twice last year, has already made a significant mark just three races into the new season. “It feels super good to win one in the third race of the year,” Sarff said. “Hopefully, it leads to even more this year. Last year, we won two of them, so this year we’re hoping we can win even more than two.”
Race Dynamics
Sarff started from outside Row 2 and quickly put pressure on early leader McIntosh. Despite several attempts to pass, it wasn’t until lap 17 that Sarff successfully executed a slide job in Turn 3. McIntosh initially countered with a crossover move, but Sarff’s persistence paid off two laps later when he took the lead for good.
“We struggled a little on the bottom – it was a little boggy – so right through the middle and the top, the thing would just carry so much speed,” Sarff explained. “It was just an amazing racecar.”
McIntosh’s Perspective
McIntosh, who led 19 laps, was caught off guard by Sarff’s pace. “I was honestly surprised when I saw Karter poke his nose to the inside because I felt so good,” McIntosh said. “At that point, I was trying to just play defense, and once he got by, I really didn’t have anything for him.”
Strong Finish for McDermand
Chase McDermand also made significant moves, passing McIntosh for second on lap 26. “I was trying to figure out [McIntosh’s] weakness and where I could gain on him a little bit,” McDermand said. “Just making different lines, trying to make speed down the straightaway.”
Sarff maintained his lead to the finish, with McDermand in second and McIntosh rounding out the podium. Taylor Reimer and Ryan Timms completed the top five.
