(March 30, 2024) New Egypt, NJ – Anthony Perrego broke through for his first Super DIRTcar Series win of 2024, capturing the Power in the Pines at New Egypt Speedway. Perrego, who had finished second twice this season, took the lead from Darren Smith with three laps to go and secured his fourth career Series victory.
Key Moments
Tanner VanDoren, the pole sitter, led the first 32 laps of the 75-lap Feature before a caution brought the field back together. On the restart, Darren Smith used the outside lane to take the lead, pushing VanDoren back. VanDoren later brought out another caution on lap 40, allowing Peter Britten to challenge Smith for the lead.
Smith reclaimed the lead from Britten on lap 45 and maintained it until Perrego made his move in the final laps. Perrego, who started eighth, steadily worked his way through the field. He took second place on lap 59 and set his sights on Smith.
With three laps to go, Perrego saw an opening in traffic and slid his car in front of Smith’s, securing the lead and ultimately the $7,500 prize.
Race Quotes
“I definitely found something off of Turn 2,” Perrego said. “The last race I won here, it was kind of the same deal. We got into lap traffic and we just had a better car.”
Smith, who finished second, acknowledged Perrego’s skillful move. “I didn’t think I made a mistake, I just think [Perrego] made a hell of a move. But we got to that lap car and I wasn’t aggressive enough.”
Peter Britten, who finished third, felt his car had more potential. “I didn’t think we were as good as we needed to be. It actually surprised me how long I was able to stay in the mix.”
