Ricky Thornton Jr. and SSI Motorsports Part Ways; O’Neal Returns to SSI

(July 9, 2024) Martinsville, IN – In a surprising turn of events, Ricky Thornton Jr. and SSI Motorsports have ended their successful partnership. SSI Motorsports owner Todd Burns cited differences in direction over the past few months as the primary reason for the decision. Thornton expressed his gratitude towards the team and its members for their support over the years.

“Todd and I met today, and he expressed that he felt the last few months hadn’t been going in the direction that he envisioned for SSI Motorsports and has decided to hire another driver. This was extremely unexpected for our family and team both, however we ultimately must respect the decision that Todd has made for his family and business,” Thornton said. He also thanked key team members Anthony Burroughs, DJ Williams, Justin Tharp, and Chris Jayko for their contributions to his success.

Thornton’s Search for New Opportunities

Currently leading the standings in both the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and the Castrol FloRacing Night in America Series, Thornton remains optimistic about finding new opportunities soon. With 19 victories already this season and his career win total surpassing 400, Thornton’s track record speaks volumes about his capabilities.

“We are currently searching for the next opportunity that will best fit our family. With us leading the standings on two tours added with a lot of momentum we have going for us so far this season, I hope that I can find something as soon as possible,” Thornton stated.

Immediate Support from the Sheppard Family

In an admirable show of sportsmanship, the Sheppard family offered Thornton a ride in their No. 5S car for the Castrol FloRacing Night in America event at Lincoln Speedway. This generous offer came within minutes of Thornton informing them of his situation, showcasing the close-knit nature of the racing community.

“Their generosity and willingness to get this car ready in less than 24 hours will never be forgotten. They are incredible people and I hope someday we can repay the favor,” Thornton shared on social media.

Hudson O’Neal Steps In at SSI Motorsports

Following Thornton’s departure, SSI Motorsports has announced the return of Hudson O’Neal to their team. O’Neal, a 23-year-old racing star from Martinsville, Indiana, will rejoin the team he initially raced for in 2016. O’Neal has been running his own team for the past few months and is set to bring his crew member Nick Hardie along to SSI Motorsports.

“We are pleased that Hudson O’Neal will be stepping back into the SSI Motorsports car,” Todd Burns stated. “Having Hudson agree to take over the SSI Motorsports car allows our team to continue doing the outstanding job they do each and every day.”

Burns expressed regret over parting ways with Thornton but emphasized the necessity of making tough decisions as a team owner. “This was not something we wanted or envisioned occurring,” Burns said. “No team wishes to be split apart in the middle of the season, especially a winning season. We do wish Ricky the best in whichever series he decides to run.”

Looking Ahead

O’Neal will debut in the SSI Motorsports Longhorn Chassis during a tripleheader event from July 11-13, covering 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, Illinois, and Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Missouri. This transition marks a new chapter for both O’Neal and SSI Motorsports as they aim to continue their success in the national tours.

As for Thornton, his immediate focus is on securing a new opportunity that aligns with his goals and current momentum. Teams interested in discussing potential collaborations with Thornton can contact him directly.
