(July 14, 2024) Orrville, OH – Tyler Erb began the 39th annual DIRTcar Summer Nationals Late Models tour without plans to vie for the overall championship. Despite leading the points standings after Week 3, he maintained his intention to focus solely on racing. However, Erb’s passion for the sport and consistent returns to the track culminated in a victorious season, as he secured the Hell Tour championship with his 11th win of the season at Wayne County Speedway.
Racing Through Adversity
Erb’s journey to the top was marked by tenacity and strategic racing. Starting sixth in the 35-lap main event at Wayne County, he navigated through the field and capitalized on opportunities created by the misfortunes of his competitors. Dillon McCowan, who led the first 18 laps, faltered with a flat tire on Lap 19, relinquishing the lead to Nick Hoffman, who later experienced a similar fate.
Capitalizing on Opportunities
As Hoffman pulled into the infield with a flat tire on Lap 23, Todd Brennan surged from 18th position to take the lead. Erb, seizing the moment, climbed from fifth to second during the restart, setting his sights on Brennan. With a few laps remaining, Erb executed a bold pass, overtaking Brennan and securing his position at the front.
The Winning Moment
On a Lap 26 restart, Erb, lined up behind Brennan, swiftly moved into the lead. He maintained his pace and composure, finishing over one second ahead of Trey Mills. This victory not only earned Erb the Week 5 points title but also marked his first major Late Model championship.
