(June 30, 2024) Sumner, IL – Will Krup made a triumphant return to Victory Lane with the DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals at Illinois’ Red Hill Raceway on Sunday night, claiming his first Series win since 2021. Krup led all 25 laps of the race, finishing over two seconds ahead of current Series points leader Trevor Neville.
Krup, hailing from Mt. Carmel, IL, is no stranger to success at Red Hill Raceway. This victory marks his fourth UMP Modified win at the track in 2024, having won every race held there this year.
“To do it here at the home racetrack makes it a little bit better too,” Krup said of his first Hell Tour win in three years. “We haven’t really got the chance to run the Summer Nationals in the last couple of years. So, to get a win on the first race is pretty big.”
Taking the Lead
Starting from fourth on the grid, Krup made an audacious move on Lap 1 to take the lead from Hunt Gossum and Ken Schrader. As the green flag dropped, Krup found a gap between Gossum and Schrader, going three-wide into Turn 1 with Gossum on the inside, Krup in the middle, and Schrader up high.
Coming out of Turn 2, Krup surged ahead, securing the lead and setting a blistering pace around the 3/8-mile oval. He maintained his position and crossed the finish line unchallenged.
Strategic Racing
“They kind of separated there, Hunt went to the bottom and Schrader kind of stayed around the top and just left that middle open,” Krup explained. “I went ahead and committed and shot the gap there and just got the lead early which is kind of big here to just get out front where you don’t have to race anybody and just set your own pace.”
Looking Ahead
The DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals will begin Week 4 at Old No. 1 Speedway in Harrisburg, AR, on Tuesday, July 2, alongside the DIRTcar Summer Nationals Late Models. Tickets will be available at the gate. Pit gates open at 4 p.m., and grandstands open at 5 p.m. Hot Laps are scheduled to begin at 6:45 p.m.
