Dirt Track Chronicles: Mickey Burrell

For Mickey Burrell, racing has been an integral part of his life for the past 19 years. His journey into the world of racing began at the age of 21, inspired by the passion his grandfather had for the sport. Watching his grandfather race as a child ignited a spark in Mickey that never faded. This early exposure to racing laid the foundation for what would become a lifelong commitment to the sport.

Mickey’s racing career began in the mini stock division at Lebanon Midway Speedway and Dallas County Speedway. Although he won only one race during this time, his enthusiasm for racing was undeterred. With an eye on the newly emerging b mod division, Mickey saw an opportunity to elevate his racing career. After a few years of competing in mini stocks, he made the transition to b mods, where he found greater success. Winning several races and even becoming a track champion, Mickey’s decision to move up the ranks proved fruitful. However, the lack of sanctioning for b mods limited their racing opportunities to certain areas, prompting Mickey and his team to make another significant transition.

The decision to sell the b mod and invest in an A mod opened new doors for Mickey. The A mod allowed them to race anywhere and mostly under a consistent rule package. Mickey’s first A mod race with the USMTS at Humboldt did not go as planned, as he failed to make the show. However, this initial setback did not deter him. Determined and resilient, Mickey went on to win several races and secured another track championship, solidifying his reputation as a skilled and dedicated racer.

Racing, however, is not a solo endeavor. It requires the unwavering support of sponsors, family, and friends. Mickey’s journey has been significantly supported by his wife, Crystal. Together, they own a small excavation and dirt work business that keeps them busy. Specializing in septic systems and various digging projects in the Fair Grove and Springfield areas, their business demands much of their time and effort. Despite the busy schedule, Mickey’s passion for racing remains a priority.

Over the years, Mickey has had the good fortune of racing with a close friend named Elston. Their partnership has been a crucial element of Mickey’s success on the track. Mickey acknowledges that without Elston’s help, he wouldn’t have been able to race as effectively. Their collaboration highlights the team effort required in racing, even though, as Mickey humorously notes, Elston does more work than he does—an admission he prefers to keep under wraps.

This year, Mickey plans to race frequently, though finding a nearby place to race on Fridays poses a challenge. However, Saturday nights offer plenty of options, and Mickey remains flexible about whether to stick to one location or explore multiple tracks. The plan will unfold as the season progresses and circumstances dictate.

When it comes to his favorite movie, Mickey leans towards John Wayne films, though racing occupies the main focus of his life. His dedication to the sport is evident in the years of excitement and joy it has brought him. Grateful for the support he has received from his sponsors, family, and friends, Mickey looks forward to continuing his racing journey for many years to come.

In summary, Mickey Burrell’s racing career is a testament to passion, resilience, and the importance of a supportive community. From his early days in mini stocks to becoming a track champion in both b mods and A mods, Mickey’s journey has been marked by determination and a love for racing. Supported by his wife Crystal, his friend Elston, and many others, Mickey’s story is one of perseverance and the pursuit of dreams, embodying the spirit of racing and the joy it brings.
