(April 6, 2024) Sumter, SC – Russell Erwin of Beaverdam, Va., showcased his prowess on the track as he regained the lead from polesitter Dustin Mitchell on lap nine to dominate Saturday’s 50-lap Billy Cagle Memorial at Sumter Speedway. Starting from the third position, Erwin controlled the race, leading 43 laps en route to a $7,500 victory. This win marks his third career victory in the Vision Wheel Steel Block Bandits Dirt Late Model Challenge Series and his first since June 18, 2021, at Dixieland Speedway in Elizabeth City, N.C.
Reflecting on his performance, Erwin expressed appreciation for the track crew at Sumter Speedway, commending their efforts in preparing the track for racing. He highlighted the versatility of the track, allowing drivers to race on multiple lines, which contributed to the exciting competition throughout the event.
Erwin’s victory also marked the fourth different winner of the Billy Cagle Memorial, adding to the prestige of the event. Blake Craft, starting from the third position, secured the runner-up spot and trailed Erwin for the final 27 laps, finishing 2.319 seconds behind. Meanwhile, Mitchell, who led laps 2-8, settled for third place after a strong early showing.
Other notable performances included Michael Rouse, who started sixth and finished fifth, and defending event winner Robbie Emory, who made an impressive run from 22nd to finish 11th.
Erwin’s Rocket Chassis, supported by sponsors such as Erwin Racing Supply and Hoosier Tire, played a vital role in his victory, emphasizing the importance of strong partnerships in motorsports.
In the points chase after Sumter, Erwin leads the standings with 109 points, followed closely by Michael Rouse with 105 points. Tyler Bare and Dustin Mitchell are tied for third with 104 points each, while Michael Batten and Derick Quade round out the top six.
The next series race is scheduled for April 13 at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, TN, offering a $5,000 prize in the Vision Wheel Steel Block Bandits Dirt Late Model Challenge Series.
