(April 6, 2024) Enid, OK – Kip Hughes, a four-time champion, found redemption at Enid Speedway on Saturday as he clinched victory in the APEX Healthcare Partners Sooner Late Model Series season opener. After a demanding week of preparation, including work on the pit area and sound system as co-promoter with the Garfield County Fairgrounds, Hughes celebrated his 37th career victory in style.
Taking to the track from the outside second row, Hughes wasted no time asserting his dominance, working his way into second place by lap 4. By lap 12, he made his move for the lead, eventually pulling away from the pack and securing an impressive win.
Reflecting on his performance, Hughes acknowledged the challenge posed by the windy conditions but praised the track’s racing surface, describing it as “wide” and “racy.” Despite the unpredictable conditions, Hughes capitalized on the opportunity to navigate the track with skill and precision.
While Hughes celebrated his victory, Damian Patocka showcased a strong performance, leading the race until lap 12 before settling for second place. Jon Herring Jr. delivered an impressive charge from 13th to finish third, rounding out the podium.
However, the day wasn’t without its challenges for some competitors. Christopher Wilhite Jr. faced hard luck after blowing his third engine of the season during hot laps, while Richard Shepler’s race was cut short due to a crash in the heat race.
As the dust settles on Enid Speedway, attention now turns to the next race at Beaver County Raceway on April 13th, promising another thrilling chapter in the APEX Healthcare Partners Sooner Late Model Series.
