MLRA Spring Nationals Opener Belongs to Davenport

(April 12, 2024) Wheatland, MO – Jonathan Davenport doesn’t seem to have any issues finding victory lane when he visits Wheatland. Night one of the 11th Annual MLRA “Spring Nationals” had 44 cars on hand for $7,000 to win and Davenport is the one to claim victory!

In 2023 Davenport went to victory lane 4 times at Lucas Oil Speedway. Davenport started the night as the fastest qualifier with a lap time of 14.802 seconds, then went on to win Earnhardt Technologies heat race 3 and completing his perfect, night in victory lane.

Garrett Smith won heat race one earning him the pole in the 40 lap feature. Unfortunately, he was charged with jumping the start and sent back a row for the restart. Davenport quickly took advantage of this and took the lead. In the first nine laps there was three cautions and Davenport was successful in fighting off any challengers.

Smith got back in second and had a side-by-side battle with Mason Ziegler. It only took 24 laps for the field to catch lap traffic. Lap 25 struck disastrous for Smith, getting too high coming out of turn 4 and colliding with the wall his night would end. This brings the field back to green with 15 laps to go and Ricky Thornton Jr up to second.

Davenport stayed out front comfortably until only a few laps left when he had to once again navigate heavy lapped traffic and a fast approaching RTJ on the bottom line. Davenport would not wind up disappointed as he claimed his 13th career Lucas Oil MLRA late model feature and 11th all time at the Lucas Oil Speedway.

The Finale of the MLRA “Spring Nationals” will take place on April 13th, 2024 with $20,000 waiting in victory lane after a 60-lap feature.
