Tyler Wolff Wins Back-to-Back Opening Night of Gressel Memorial

(June 21, 2024) Park City, KS – Tyler Wolff continues to dominate the Summit USMTS National Championship presented by RacinDirt, securing his second consecutive opening night victory at the Ed Gressel Memorial. Held at 81 Speedway in Park City, Kansas, the event marked the return of the Mel Hambelton Racing USMTS Central Region after a series of weather delays.

Race Highlights

Wolff set the tone early by clocking the fastest lap in QA1 heat race qualifying and winning Fast Shafts Heat #1. Although he briefly lost the lead to Mark Smith mid-race, a timely caution and subsequent incident allowed Wolff to reclaim and retain the top spot.

Just past the halfway mark, Smith maneuvered underneath Wolff’s Lobo Racing No. 4W to take the lead. However, an encounter with a lapped car disrupted Smith’s momentum, allowing Wolff to pounce and regain the lead. A caution on Lap 25 brought the field together, setting up a tense restart.

On the restart, Tyler Davis and Jake Timm slipped past Smith, with Davis securing second place. The race saw another caution when top USMTS points contenders Jake Timm and Jim Chisholm collided, triggering a multi-car incident.

Despite the chaos, Wolff maintained his lead and cruised to victory, marking his second straight win on the opening night of the Gressel Memorial.

Driver Reactions

“It’s his home track,” Wolff said about Davis. “He’s no joke, so I was just trying to do what I could. My tires were starting to go, and I was hoping for a longer run when the caution came out. I just thought, ‘We’ll see where we’re at and hope we hang on,’ but we got the victory.”

Davis, reflecting on his second-place finish, noted, “I didn’t want to see that yellow. I felt like we were closing in on him, but we had to be careful. I altered my line several times and finally got into a rhythm. After falling back, I had to push hard to get back up to second.”

Exciting Battles

Jim Chisholm managed to climb back through the field to finish sixth after being involved in the earlier incident. The race saw intense battles for positions throughout the field, with Jason Hughes, Dereck Ramirez, and Tanner Mullens rounding out the top ten.
